No GST Level 2 courses in your territory? Check out our GST Level 2 Online Certification Course or consider hosting GST at your agency for free!

In order for an agency to experience the full benefit of the GST program, we recommend each instructor completes Levels 1 and 2 as soon as possible. In the past, the only way to achieve this, was to attend 5-day GST Level 1 course at one location and then attend a 5-day GST Level 2 course at a completely different location several months later. With the new Dual Certification Course format, we conduct both courses back-to-back, so that students can learn all 40 techniques and all the Gracie teaching methodologies in 8 days instead of 10.

  • Reduced Training Time: Without any prior experience in jiu-jitsu or defensive tactics, a participant can get certified in GST Level 1 and GST Level 2 in the shortest time possible.
  • Less OOO Time: Since the entire course is covered in 8 training days (Monday through Friday in week 1 + Monday through Wednesday in week 2), each participant will spend less time out of office time than if they completed both courses separately.
  • Reduced Travel Expenses: Since both levels are completed back-to-back at the same location, students will save money on airfare and other travel expenses when compared to completing both courses at separate locations.
  • Reduced Tuition Expenses: The cost for Level 1 and Level 2 certification, if completed separately, is $3,000 ($1,500 per course). The cost for Dual Certification using this format is $2,500.

Gracie Survival Tactics (GST) is a revolutionary defensive tactics system based on Gracie Jiu-Jitsu that incorporates time-tested techniques into an easy-to-learn system designed to help officers verbally and physically de-escalate while humanely prevailing resistant and/or aggressive subjects.

Active-duty law enforcement professionals, as well as military personnel and first responders, can access the GST system and become Certified Instructors via our Live Instructor Certification Program (Live ICP) or via our video-based Online Instructor Certification Program (Online ICP).

Explore this page to learn more about the origins and objectives of GST program, and then visit the other tabs to learn about the path to GST Instructor Certification.

A Century-Long Track Record
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, also known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or BJJ, was developed by Helio and Carlos Gracie. Beginning in the 1920’s, Helio began his journey of tailoring the system to use various principles, such as leverage and distance management, to defeat opponents who were almost twice his size and much more athletic. Helio spent his long life testing and refining the techniques against all challengers.

After the UFC took the world by storm in 1993, people all over the world realized that Gracie Jiu-Jitsu was the only system that would consistently give someone a realistic chance against a larger, more athletic opponent. Shortly thereafter, in response to requests by law enforcement officers, the Gracie Family extracted the simplest and most effective techniques to address the most common threat situations facing law enforcement professionals.

In the ensuing thirty years, GST has been taught to countless law enforcement agencies (Local, State, and Federal), and the program continues to evolve every single day based on the feedback from those whose lives depend on it. As Rener Gracie likes to say:

“In the beginning, we were teaching jiu-jitsu TO law enforcement; now we’re teaching jiu-jitsu FOR law enforcement.”

A Perfect Fit for Today’s Tactical, Legal & Political Environment
The GST System has recently been reviewed both medically and legally for use in law enforcement. Furthermore, although GST was developed for its tactical effectiveness, its leverage-based techniques are less likely to cause serious injury to both the officer and arrestee. Also, GST’s benign appearance has a greater acceptance from a viewing public, which has been increasingly scrutinizing televised videos of police actions. Here are the links to those reviews as well as some articles about the system:

GST Introductory Class

The 5 Pillars of GST
Through the GST program our goal isn’t merely to teach defensive tactics to an agency but rather to provide the agency with the tools to completely transform its culture from the inside out. This culture shift occurs when the following five pillars are in place at an agency.

De-escalation Culture
Above everything else, in GST we teach systems and strategies such as Dynamic De-escalation™ to reduce the intensity of each encounter, gain voluntary compliance, and mitigate the need for a higher level of force. Once this culture of de-escalation has permeated an agency, the questions isn’t “What’s the highest level of justifiable force for this encounter?” but rather, “What’s the lowest level of force needed to neutralize the threat and/or take the subject into custody?”
Sound Decision Making
Through GST we condition officers to make effective decisions under the most challenging of circumstances. The “Amygdala Highjack” is known to occur when an officer experiences loss of control in a high-stress situations, at which point they are no longer able to make effective decisions. By teaching officers how to calmly and effectively manage physical encounters, they’re able to maintain the cognitive function of their Prefrontal Cortex so that they can make sound decisions even under the most stressful of circumstances.
Mission Specific Tactics
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a rapidly growing sport, but at most BJJ schools, the practice of the art is tailored to sportive grappling competition rather than self-defense. Unless the art is adapted for law enforcement applications, there are many facets of BJJ that would not only be ineffective in law enforcement but could potentially increase liability for the officer and the agency. GST is the most widely adopted jiu-jitsu based defensive tactics program in the world because every technique has been highly scrutinized and specifically adapted for law enforcement application.
Injury Reduction on Both Sides
At most agencies, defensive tactics training is conducted with a “fight club” mentality, which not only leads to higher rate of training injuries, but it discourages the officers who need the training the most from attending. In GST graduates are empowered with a turn-key curriculum and the time-tested Gracie Teaching Methodologies that will make DT classes safe, productive and encouraging for all officers at the agency, so that they want to come back of more. Best of all, because of the control-based nature of the techniques, published data at agencies where officers engage in regular jiu-jitsu practice has revealed a reduction in officer field injuries by as much as 48% and reduction in subject injuries by as much as 53%.
Community Trust Building
There is nothing that erodes trust in a community more rapidly than when law enforcement officers use force that is perceived as inhumane and/or excessive, particularly in situations where a lower level of force could have reasonably been applied. Since GST teaches techniques that are so humane in their application and so benign in their appearance, the chances that an officer uses force in a manner that is likely to incite the community is drastically reduced, and only in the absence of inciting incidents can the foundation for a trust-building relationship with the community be established.

Tactical Gear Tested
We have tested every technique in the Gracie Survival Tactics course in body armor and a duty belt. In fact, we have included the full tactical gear demo for Level 1 and Level 2 techniques in the GST online video courses. At the five-day instructor certification courses, the techniques are practiced in duty gear to ensure universal effectiveness.GST Banner

POST Certified Nationwide
For nearly three decades, our objective has remained the same: create an arrest and control program that provides the optimal solution to help law enforcement officers do their jobs as safely as possible while navigating the constantly evolving tactical, legal, and political environment of the nation. Gracie Survival Tactics (GST) is that solution.

In recent years, we have worked very closely with State Commissions, further modifying the GST program, to ensure that we meet highest standards when it comes to civilian safety and tactical de-escalation.

Thanks to the efforts of our in-house team and the support of so many LEOs nationwide, GST course is now POST Certified in almost every state, making Gracie University the only jiu-jitsu organization in the country to achieve this distinction!

BJJ Black Belt & Police Lieutenant Critiques GST

Educated Subjects
MMA is the fastest growing sport in the world, and the general public’s knowledge of basic fighting strategies and techniques has never been so high. There is a very real risk that a law enforcement professional will encounter a subject with some form of martial arts training. The GST program is designed to give law enforcement professionals – regardless of age, gender or athletic ability – the skills to: 1) Neutralize the threat, 2) Retain control of their weapons, and 3) Achieve a position of advantage so they can utilize appropriate force.

Remember, while you are reading this, the subject may be training.

WATCH: Subject Uses “Rear Choke” on Police Officer

Training Topics
In the GST program, everything we teach falls into one of these five categories:

  • Survival & Escape Strategies: One of the worst-case scenarios for a law enforcement officer is to be taken to the ground by an aggressive subject. The GST course trains participants to use reliable leverage-based techniques to neutralize the initial barrage of strikes and escape from underneath the subject to regain a position of advantage. Additionally, since the techniques do not rely on strength, speed, or athleticism, they can be employed by smaller officers against larger, stronger subjects.
  • Weapon Retention Techniques: A number of law enforcement officers who are killed in the line of duty are shot with their own weapon. Furthermore, when a subject disarms a police officer of any of their less lethal weapons, chances of the officer having to escalate to deadly force increase exponentially. The GST course teaches a series of simple yet highly-effective weapon retention principles that will defeat an attacker’s attempt to disarm the officer from any position in the fight, standing or on the ground.
  • Tactical De-escalation: For most, de-escalation is limited to verbal strategies. However, in the GST course, officers also learn Dynamic De-escalation™ which teaches officers how to also de-escalate once the situation becomes physical. Since the techniques are all based on non-violent control holds, and do not emphasize the use strikes, they are inherently de-escalatory. So even in the middle of what would otherwise be perceived as a violent physical encounter, a GST-trained officer can stay calm and mitigate the need for higher levels of force.
  • Arrest & Control Procedures: In a physical altercation with an actively aggressive subject, the interaction isn’t resolved until the threat has been neutralized and the subject is safely in custody. As such, the GST course specializes in the application of easy-to-learn highly effective handcuffing techniques that can be applied from any position in the fight and are effective in both solo and multi-officer arrest scenarios.
  • Gracie Teaching Methodologies: The GST course introduces participants to the time-tested Gracie Teaching Methodologies – perfected over nearly a century. Upon learning these skills, Gracie University certifies course participants to return to their organizations to share the invaluable survival skills with their colleagues. At many agencies, including the Los Angeles Police Department, the Gracie Teaching Methodologies are said to have completely changed the culture of the defensive tactics programs at the agency.

The Multi-Level Gracie System
Gracie Survival Tactics is a multi-level Defensive Tactics Instructor Certification Program that is comprised of 40 lessons in total: 23 are explored Level 1, and the remaining 17 are explored in Level 2.

  • GST Level 1 Instructor Certification Program consists of 23 lessons that address the most common scenarios that a law enforcement professional is likely to confront in a hands-on encounter. This course is designed to take officers with absolutely no previous jiu-jitsu experience and equip them with the time-tested techniques and teaching methodologies to confidently instructor other officers within their organization. GST Level 1 Instructor Certification can be achieved by completing the program in person or by completing the course online and demonstrating proficiency via video upload.
  • GST Level 2 Instructor Certification Program adds 17 more lessons to complete the system that will give law enforcement professionals the tools to survive and prevail in the ever-changing, fast-paced environment. Extra emphasis is given to the incorporation of multiple-officer tactics, including the groundbreaking new SafeWrap™ lateral restraint system, that will empower officers to work as a team to manage high-stress encounters with maximum efficiency and the lowest level of necessary force. GST Level 2 Instructor Certification can be achieved by completing the program in person or by completing the course online and demonstrating proficiency via video upload.

Dual Certification Opportunity (GST Levels 1 & 2)

  • Less OOO Time: Since the entire course is covered in 8 training days (Monday through Friday in week 1 + Monday through Wednesday in week 2), each participant will spend less time out of office than if they completed both courses separately.
  • Reduced Travel Expenses: Since both levels are completed back-to-back at the same location, students will save money on airfare and other travel expenses when compared to completing both courses at separate locations.
  • Reduced Tuition Expenses: The cost for Level 1 and Level 2 certification, if completed separately, is $3000 ($1500 per course). The cost for Dual Certification using this format is $2500.

To: Gracie University
From: Richard Lemro
Subject: Instructor/training review

Tom with studentGood morning, I recently attended the Gracie Survival Tactics Level 1 & Level 2 Dual Certification Course in Woodbury, New Jersey August 29-September 7th of 2022. I wanted to provide this letter as a thank you and testament to your GST instructors and GST program. The head instructor was Tom Chuckerel, assistant instructor Howard Steele, and intermittent assistant Rich Komar. The training was absolutely phenomenal. By far the best training I have attended. One of the best experiences I've had.

I do have some background in jiu jitsu but have always been trying to figure out how to best apply jiu jitsu to law enforcement. GST really bridged the gap for me.

The defensive tactics techniques are well thought out, relatively easy to learn, applicable to everyone regardless of physical attributes and GST provided the perfect amount of detail.

Besides the techniques, the class itself is structured very well with sequential learning and techniques flowing off of one another. I thoroughly enjoyed the training delivery via Slice Presentation Formula (layering technique). It really was an efficient way to learn. The taught error correction strategies are also a huge win.

The program is very thorough on de-escalating during a physical altercation, teaching not to take an altercation personally: "you don't fight the person you fight their will to fight"

I love the concept of controlling the suspect and not rushing to handcuff a suspect before compliance is achieved. Another teaching point I really liked was how much GST talked about communication with other Officers when a physical altercation and arrest occurs.

Now I would like to speak about the “make or break” of any program, the instructors. The instructors provided an extremely good training atmosphere and were very encouraging to everyone. I was not quite sure what to expect and thus I brought plenty of Motrin, Excedrin migraine, pain reliever gels and ice packs. Surprisingly I did not need any of the above as the class was extremely safe, well maintained, and dialed up intensity appropriately and as needed. The instructors did a phenomenal job of providing energy and good vibes. I don’t think I saw any students that appeared embarrassed, afraid to ask questions etc. I asked several questions and all were answered effectively.

The instructors made themselves available to students, were very humble and legitimately seemed invested in the students. The head instructor actually had remembered all ~80 some student's names by the end of day 1 (shocking considering there are not assigned seats, sitting on wrestling mats) it was a rather impressive display. I was able to have dinner with the head instructor Tom Chuckerel several nights and I have to say that GST hires down to earth well-rounded instructors that are just plain old good people. Tom is a class act. It was great to meet him and honestly, I would like to call him my friend. I knew the training and instructors would be good, but this exceeded my expectations.

I honestly can't speak highly enough about the course or the instructors. While I had seen a few of the techniques or variations of techniques on youtube, the instructors had a way of "making things click" and providing a lot of details that gave "ahah moments. "Sometimes you get what you pay for and the quality was very obvious in this training. It was a great experience, not just a training, and I am excited to share the lessons with our department.

P.S. Please see this letter gets forwarded to GST administrators and Gracie University owners. I would like to make sure the company truly understands the value of their instructors.

Respectfully,
S/Cpl. Richard Lemro

GST Live Instructor Certification Program

Cost: $1500 Per Participant

Select Location

The Level 1 GST Live Instructor Certification Program (Live ICP) is an immersive 5-day course, with eight hours of training per day, totaling 40 hours of instruction. The Live ICP is hosted year-round at various locations throughout the country. Absolutely no experience is necessary to participate in the course, and the techniques are designed to work for anyone regardless of age, gender, or fitness level.

The first three days of the GST course are dedicated to technical instruction. You will be introduced to all GST techniques in a calm and cooperative setting, and then we will use a series of Reflex Development Drills to develop your muscle memory and build your confidence.

The fourth day of the course is dedicated entirely to the Gracie Teaching Methodologies that have been perfected over nearly a century. Upon learning the formula, you will have a chance to hone your teaching skills in small focus groups. The last day of the course is when the final evaluation takes place. You will be tested on your techniques and teaching methodologies, and if your performance meets Gracie University standards, you will receive your GST Level 1 Instructor Certification.

Qualifications
Absolutely no experience is necessary to participate in the Level 1 GST Live ICP, and the techniques are designed to work for anyone regardless of age, gender, or fitness level. You must be active-duty military, law enforcement, or a first responder to participate. If you have any questions about your specific situation, feel free to email us at [email protected].

Training Partners
Since each Live ICP typically attracts 50-150 participants from all over the world, you don’t need to bring a training partner. Although most agencies send two or more instructors to ensure the successful implementation of the GST curriculum at the organization, many participants attend the course alone and have no trouble learning the material. Part of the reason the course is so successful is because we go to great lengths to make sure everyone has a training partner that is best suited for them.

Instructor Handbook
Upon arrival to the Live ICP, you will be given a printed copy of the official GST Instructor Handbook which outlines all the techniques and teaching methods covered during the week. Not only will the handbook help you keep track of everything you learn throughout the week, but it will serve as an invaluable reference when you return home and are expected to teach the GST techniques to your colleagues.

Evaluation Process
During the Live ICP, we are evaluating you the entire week. Your techniques, your dedication, your interactions with the other students, etc. At the end of the week, we conduct a series of drills designed to assess your competency in the skills learned and use mock teaching exercises to verify your comprehension of the Gracie Teaching Methodologies. If your performance meets Gracie University standards, you will receive your GST Level 1 Instructor Certification.

Certification Details
Upon successful completion of the Live ICP, you will receive a GST Instructor Certificate, a GST Instructor T-shirt, and a GST Challenge Coin. You will be authorized to teach the GST Level 1 curriculum for 2 years (24 months) within your organization.

Online GST Access
For the duration of your certification period, you will have access to the online GST curriculum. The online curriculum is regularly updated with technique improvements and program modifications and features private forums where you can ask questions about techniques and get answers from GST master instructors. This is an invaluable resource, particularly when you are actively teaching GST in your organization.

Expert Witness Support
Should any UOF litigation arise involving the use of the GST techniques within your agency, Gracie University master instructors are willing to testify as subject matter experts on the agency’s behalf, so long as the defensive tactics instructor who taught the officer under investigation holds a valid GST Instructor Certificate.

Recertification
To maintain your valid GST Instructor Certification you will need to recertify every 24 months. This can be done by attending any Level 1 Live ICP or you can do it online using our Video Evaluation Process. Alternatively, you may choose to complete the GST Level 2 Live ICP which would simultaneously certify you in Level 2 while also serving as your Level 1 recertification.

Action Steps
If the Live ICP is your preferred method of certification, please take the following steps:

  1. Select Your Course: Click here to review the list of upcoming course dates and locations.
  2. Save Your Spot: GST courses almost always reach capacity. To reserve your spot as quickly as possible, select the preferred course location and register in the online Gracie store using a credit card. If you need an invoice or would like to pay via government issued purchase order, click here.
  3. See You There: Once you’ve reserved your spot, and we’ve verified your credentials as active-duty law enforcement, military, or first responder, we’ll send you additional information to help you make the most of your GST experience!

Absolutely no experience is necessary to participate in the Level 1 GST Online ICP, and the techniques are designed to work for anyone regardless of age, gender, or fitness level. All you need is an internet connection, and a soft surface to train on and at least one dedicated training partner (see below). You must be active-duty military, law enforcement, or first responder to participate. If you have any questions about your specific situation feel free to email us at [email protected].

No Risk 10-day "Consideration Period"
Gracie University pioneered online jiu-jitsu instruction, particularly when it comes to the use of a Video Evaluation Process for quality assurance. We have been doing online courses/certifications in the civilian sector for over 10 years, and the cumulative results have exceeded all of our expectations! In fact, we have over 270 civilian-operated Certified Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Training Centers worldwide and every one of them was certified “online.” That said, we are very excited to deploy our proven online certification processes in the law enforcement sector, even though we understand that it’s not “customary.” To eliminate any reservations you have regarding this method of learning/certification, we will grant you a 10-day “Consideration Period” when you enroll in the GST Online ICP. If, by the tenth 10th day, you aren’t convinced that the GST Online ICP path is for you, just let us know, and we’ll gladly remove you from the program and issue a full refund. Bottom line: we know it's a new learning format, but we're so confident in the quality of the program that we'll gladly assume any and all risk in order for you to give it a try.

Training Partners
All the GST techniques are designed and taught to be practiced with another person, so you will need at least one dedicated training partner in order to complete the Online ICP. Most departments typically send two or more officers to achieve GST certification, since it greatly increases the chances of successful implementation of the GST curriculum at the organization. That said, your selected training partner may be one that is pursuing GST Instructor Certification, but this is not a requirement. Neither you or your training partner need any previous experience to successfully complete the GST Online ICP.

Instructor Handbook
When you unlock the Online ICP, you will have the opportunity to download the official GST Instructor Handbook (pdf) which outlines all the techniques and teaching methods covered during the course. We recommend you print the handbook upon beginning the program, so you have a physical copy at your disposal through the learning process. Not only will the handbook help you keep track of everything you learn, but it will serve as an invaluable reference when you are expected to teach the GST techniques to your colleagues.

Evaluation Process
Upon completing the Online ICP, you will need to demonstrate your technique and teaching skills using our Video Evaluation Process. On or before the 60-day deadline, you will upload five (5) separate videos, based on specific criteria we will specify in the Gracie University Online Testing Center. A GST Master Instructor will review the videos and if your performance meets Gracie University standards, you will receive your GST Level 1 Instructor Certification. The first attempt at the Video Evaluation is covered in the cost of the Online ICP. If you fail to submit your evaluation videos on or before the 60-day deadline, or if you do not pass the test, you will have the opportunity to request a 30-day extension (additional fees will apply). Not only would this extend your access to the program for an additional 30 days, it would also give you another opportunity to submit your Video Evaluation. More details can be found in the Testing Center.

Officer Mason Barnes Uses GST to Survive Grapple with Armed Suspect

Certification Details
Upon successful completion of the Online ICP, you will receive a GST Instructor Certificate, a GST Instructor T-shirt, and a GST Challenge Coin.

To maintain your GST Instructor Certification you will need to recertify every 24 months. This can be done by attending any Level 1 Live ICP or you can do it online using our Video Evaluation Process. Alternatively, you may choose to complete the GST Level 2 ICP (online or in person) which would simultaneously certify you in Level 2 while also serving so your Level 1 recertification.

Action Steps
If the Online ICP is your preferred method of GST Certification, please take the following steps:

  1. Submit Application & Payment: Since GST is only accessible to active-duty law enforcement, military and first responders, you will need to submit a short application verifying your credentials prior to gaining access to the material. If your training partner also intends to pursue certification, they will need to submit an application of their own.
  2. Unlock the Program: Once we review your application and verify your credentials, you will be accepted into the program and you will have 12 months to unlock the program and begin your training. Once unlocked, on the date of your choosing, you will have 60-days to complete the program.
  3. Upload Your Evaluation Videos: On or before the 60-day deadline, you will upload five (5) videos in the online Testing Center based on the specific GST evaluation criteria we’ve outlined in the program. If your performance meets Gracie University quality standards, you will join the global family of GST Certified Instructors!

GST Level 2 Live Instructor Certification Program

Cost: $1500 Per Participant

Select Location

This 5-day course is hosted year-round at various locations. Day 1 is entirely dedicated to a comprehensive review of the Level 1 material. Days 2 and 3 are committed to learning the Level 2 techniques. Day 4 is used for to review and refine the Gracie Teaching Methodologies, and Day 5 is when the final evaluation takes place.

Not only does successful Level 2 completion certify participants as Level 2 GST instructors, but it also serves as Level 1 recertification.

Listed below are some pertinent details for the Level 2 GST Instructor Certification Program (ICP).

Qualifications
To qualify to attend the Level 2 GST ICP, you must be active-duty military, law enforcement, or a first responder, and you must have completed GST Level 1 no more than two years prior to your Level 2 course commencement date. Exceptions are made to the two-year rule on a case-by-case basis. If you graduated from Level 1 more than two years ago and would like to be considered for Level 2 participation, please email us at [email protected].

Upon arrival to the Live ICP, you will be given a printed copy of the official GST Level 2 Instructor Handbook which outlines all the techniques and teaching methods covered during the week.

If your performance meets Gracie University standards, you will receive your GST Level 2 Instructor Certification.

Certification Details
Upon successful completion of the Live ICP, you will receive a GST Level 2 Instructor Certificate, a GST Level 2 Instructor T-shirt, and a GST Level 2 Challenge Coin. Since GST Level 2 also serves as a GST Level 1 recertification, you will be authorized to teach both Levels for 2 years (24 months) within your organization.

Online GST Access
For the duration of your certification period, you will have access to the online Level 1 and Level 2 GST curriculums. The online curriculums are regularly updated with technique improvements and program modifications and feature private forums where you can ask questions about techniques and get answers from GST master instructors. This is an invaluable resource, particularly when you are actively teaching GST in your organization.

Exclusive LAB Access
The LAB is an ever-evolving online video library comprised of the new ideas that surface at each GST Level 2 Live Instructor Certification Course. Law Enforcement Officers in attendance from all over the world are asked to share their favorite non-GST techniques they’ve ever learned (from any source), and these presentations are digitally recorded and uploaded to Gracie University Online. A new LAB session is uploaded after every live GST Level 2 course and access to these recordings is only granted to actively certified GST Level 2 instructors.

To maintain your valid GST Instructor Certification you will need to recertify every 24 months.

Jiu-Jitsu Works PERFECTLY for Police Officers

In recent years, we have worked very closely with State Commissions, further modifying the GST program, to ensure that we meet highest standards when it comes to civilian safety and tactical de-escalation.

Thanks to the efforts of our in-house team and the support of so many LEOs nationwide, GST course is now POST Certified (or equivalent) in over 40 states in America, making Gracie University the only jiu-jitsu organization in the country to achieve this distinction!

While we are very proud to offer all of our programs online, please keep in mind that POST credit (or equivalent) is only awarded for live, in-person completion of the GST program.

IADLEST National Certification Program™
The International Association of Directors of Law Enforcement Standards and Training (IADLEST) launched the National Certification Program (NCP) to establish law enforcement training standards and "best practices" relating to improved professionalism and skill sets for the nation’s first responders.

Since NCP courses are recognized nationally, any time an officer from one of the 36 member states (listed below) completes any of the in-person GST courses (Level 1 or Level 2), the training hours will count towards the officer’s mandatory in-service training requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions
Don’t worry, we are working around the clock to achieve POST Certification in all the remaining states. In the meantime, get to the GST course as soon as possible, not for the POST credit, but for the best training of your life.

If you are an officer an IADLEST member state, but complete the GST course in a different state, you will still get POST credit. The only exception to this is if you complete the course in California, since we had to modify the course to meet California POST standards and as a result, you won’t get IADLEST POST credit.

We created the GST Online Instructor Certification Program so that officers with limited budgets and/or travel restrictions could learn all the GST techniques and get certified to teach GST from anywhere in the world. In order to get POST credit, however, the State Commissions require officers to complete the live in-person courses.

Yes, the GST Level 2 course is POST Certified in California, Arizona, Michigan and New Jersey and is pending certification in several other states.

For any questions about POST credit or if you are positioned to help us achieve POST Certification in any of the states we are not currently certified in, please contact the GST Team by sending an email to: [email protected] or calling 310-893-0400 ext. 3.

The average police officer in America receives less than four (4) hours of hands-on defensive tactics training per year, and it’s not enough. We have long hypothesized that regular off-duty jiu-jitsu training (at least 1 hour per week) for law enforcement officers would increase officer safety, lower department liability, and reduce the likelihood of injuries to subjects, but the evidence supporting this hypothesis has been mostly anecdotal, until now!

After nearly 30 years of advocating for more jiu-jitsu in law enforcement, it feels like we're finally turning the corner on defensive tactics training in America. Share the information contained herein with your colleagues and command staff, and when the agency is ready to take the next step, we’re here to help!

Mandatory BJJ Training for Police (Case Study)

Marietta Police Department (MPD), has been sending officers to the Gracie Survival Tactics (GST) train-the-trainer course since 2009. After a UOF video went viral for all the wrong reasons, they knew it was time for change. On April 1, 2019, MPD instituted a training program that made weekly Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) training mandatory for all new hires during the five months they were in the police academy. The training took place at a carefully vetted civilian owned/operated BJJ academy within the community. The program was so successful that on July 1, 2020, Marietta PD extended the department-sponsored BJJ training opportunity to all in-service officers.

Marietta Police Department BJJ Program Data
To date, 95 of the 145 sworn MPD officers have opted in to the BJJ program and 50 officers have not. The officers who averaged at least (1) BJJ class per week, are referred to as “BJJ officers.” Here is a summary of the data collected thus far:

Training Injuries

  • MPD has had 95 officers attend over 2,600 civilian-operated BJJ classes with one (1) reported training injury.

Taser Deployments

  • Since the inception of the program, non-BJJ officers used their Taser in 77% of Use of Force (UOF) incidents.
  • BJJ officers used their Taser in 54% of UOF incidents (85% of which were used to stop a foot pursuit – not to end the physical altercation)
  • 23% reduction in Taser deployments in the BJJ officer group.

UOF Injuries to Officers

  • In the 18 months prior to instituting mandatory BJJ training, 29 officers were injured while carrying out arrests.
  • In the 18 months after instituting mandatory BJJ training for new hires, 15 officers were injured while carrying out arrests.
  • 48% reduction in officer injuries department wide.
  • None of the injured officers were BJJ officers.

UOF Injuries to Subjects

  • In 2020, there were 33 UOF incidents involving Marietta PD officers: 20 incidents involving non-BJJ officers, and 13 incidents involving BJJ officers.
  • In the 20 incidents involving non-BJJ officers, the suspect sustained injuries requiring hospitalization 65% of the time (13 incidents of suspect hospitalization).
  • In the 13 incidents involving BJJ officers, the suspect sustained injuries requiring hospitalization 31% of the time (4 incidents of suspect hospitalization).
  • Serious injuries to a suspect are 53% less likely when interacting with BJJ officers.
  • BJJ officers are 59% less likely to engage in UOF than non-BJJ officers.

Financial Implications

  • Based on an average workers’ comp claim of $4,768, the total estimated savings from the reduction in officers’ injuries is estimated at $66,752.
  • Training Investment: $26,000 (2600 department-sponsored classes charged at $10 per class).
  • Net Savings for MPD: $40,752

Officer Wellness and Resiliency

In addition to increasing officer and civilian safety through the use of non-violent and de-escalatory control tactics, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has proven to significant contributor to enhanced officer wellness and resiliency at law enforcement agencies throughout the country. Here are some of the most notable benefits experienced by any officer who engages in the regular practice of BJJ:

Improved Resilience
Resilience is the capacity to prepare for, recover from, and adapt to stress and adversity. The art of BJJ is one of the most beneficial activities any officer can engage in since it explores every imaginable problem that one could encounter in an altercation requires officers to calmly apply precise techniques to solve them. Initially, every officer questions their capacity to solve the problems presented on the mat, but over time, they become more and more confident in their abilities and eventually they realize one of the core tenants of BJJ - every problem is a technique waiting to be discovered.
"True" Confidence
Most officers derive their confidence solely from the authority they have as a police officer (some call it "uniform confidence"). In BJJ, an officer greatly enhances their ability to solve problems, overcome adversity and deal with high-stress situations without relying on their duty weapon, and this is when "true confidence" begins to flourish. For many officers, achieving this level of true confidence not only allows them to be more patient, compassionate, and de-escalatory with the civilians whom they interact with on duty, but also with their friends/family. By synergistically improving their quality of life across the board, the benefits of this profound increase in true confidence cannot be overstated.
PFC Activation
The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is the part of the brain that controls rational decision making, amongst other things. When an officer experiences an actual or perceived loss of control in a physical altercation, the brain is taken over by the amygdala - the part of the brain responsible for fear responses that causes an officer to fight, flight or freeze. When this "amygdala highjack" takes place, an officer is much more likely to rapidly escalate their level of force, even in situations for which escalation wasn't necessary. By giving officers highly-effective strategies and techniques to maintain control during an altercation, BJJ enables an officer to maintain PFC activation and avoid the amygdala highjack thereby avoiding any unnecessary escalation of force and all of the negative consequences to the officer and the community that may result from escalating force when it may have been avoidable.
Stress Reduction
The dangerous effects of PTSD on law enforcement officers are well documented. The extreme stress and traumatizing events experienced by officers on a daily basis can be too much for the average person to bear. One of the top reported benefits of BJJ for police officers is that of reducing stress by demanding full physical and mental focus during practice. When engaging in BJJ practice, the mind of the officer must remain centered on the task at hand and this forces them to engage in a form of “kinetic meditation.” Therapeutic benefits are enhanced by the fact that this process is always conducted with a friend or colleague in a safe and collaborative learning environment. This practice of regularly "letting go" has proven to be highly effective at reducing stress and mitigating the effects of PTSD for law enforcement professionals throughout the country.
Physical Fitness
The physical demands of law enforcement are undeniable, yet many officers have trouble finding the motivation to go to the gym. What is so unique about BJJ is that even though the officers show up for the techniques and the mental growth, they invariably get the benefit of a highly-engaging full-body workout. If it's true that the best workouts are the ones that you're excited to do, then it no surprise that officers everywhere are falling in love with BJJ.
Community Relations
For many officers, regularly engaging in negative interactions with members of the community is a source of anxiety and depression. Through BJJ, officers are given the opportunity to engage in healthy interactions with members of the community on a regular basis. They work together, they solve problems together and they sweat together. Real friendships are built on the mat and the benefits of these relationships, for both officers and civilians, have a positive impact beyond measure.

For any agency interested in instituting a department-backed BJJ program comparable to that in Marietta, we recommend the following three steps:

Step 1: Get GST Certified (Optional)

Marietta Police Department has been sending its in-house defensive tactics instructors to the Gracie Survival Tactics (GST) Instructor Certification Courses since 2009. If you are interested in transforming your department with jiu-jitsu, there are benefits to doing it from the inside out. By sending your agency’s defensive tactics instructors to get GST certified, not only will you ensure that they learn the most important non-violent control tactics in jiu-jitsu, but you will also ensure that they understand the unique adaptations that are necessary to make Brazilian Jiu-jitsu effective in law enforcement applications. Keep in mind, however, that as long as the in-service officers at your agency are limited to the typical four (4) hours of state-mandated annual defensive tactics training, your agency will never see the results that Marietta PD and other progressive agencies are experiencing due to their partnerships with carefully-vetted civilian owned BJJ schools.

An additional benefit is that the GST Instructor Certification Course is POST Certified throughout the country, making Gracie University the first civilian-owned BJJ organization to earn this distinct honor. In almost every state, officers who successfully complete the GST program get credit towards their annual in-service training requirements.

GST Instructor Certification can be achieved by attending one of many live 5-day GST Live Instructor Certification Courses throughout the year, or remotely by using our 60-day GST Online Instructor Certification Program.

Once your department has incorporated the fundamentals of jiu-jitsu into its existing defensive tactics program, then you’ll be ready to partner with a civilian-operated BJJ school in your community so that every officer can get the benefit of regular BJJ practice.

Step 2: Find the Right BJJ School

If you want real results, you need real change. Partnering with the right BJJ school to grant your officers weekly supplementary jiu-jitsu training is one of the most important decisions your agency will ever make. Although the BJJ industry as a whole remains totally unregulated, Gracie University (GU) is a standalone global jiu-jitsu organization with hundreds of Certified Training Centers (CTCs) located throughout the world. In addition to criminal background checks, each Gracie University instructor completes a rigorous certification process to ensure the highest quality standard, making CTCs the optimal partner schools for law enforcement agencies.

Here are the some of the most important considerations when partnering with a civilian operated BJJ school as well as some of the benefits offered exclusively at Gracie University Certified Training Centers:

  • Structure: Most Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) schools have no curriculum, making the learning experience confusing and overwhelming – particularly for beginners. Conversely, GU CTCs are required to adhere to specific curricula and teaching methodologies prescribed by GU Headquarters to ensure each officer is provided the optimal learning experience regardless of gender, age, or athletic ability.
  • Safety: Avoiding training injuries is a top priority at Gracie University CTCs. Unlike regular BJJ schools where beginners are sparring from day one, all Gracie University instructors are required to adhere to specific safety protocols (such as no sparring for beginners), that will ensure a safe and encouraging learning experience for every officer, including those with no prior BJJ experience.
  • Self-Defense: Law Enforcement Officers put themselves at risk every single day. Most BJJ schools only teach the sportive aspect of jiu-jitsu, much of which has limited applicability in law enforcement scenarios. Gracie University CTCs, on the other hand, are 100% focused on street self-defense. As a result, most of the techniques each officer will learn can be immediately applied in the field to enhance officer and civilian safety (subject to department UOF policy).
  • Full Schedule: With a full schedule of weekly jiu-jitsu classes for students of all skill levels, officers will have maximum flexibility to attend classes at times that are convenient for them.
  • Offiicial Belt Promotions: Officers who maintain a consistent training schedule will have the opportunity to earn official belt promotions in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. With officer morale at an all-time low, the opportunity to invest in a personal skillset while interacting with members of the community in a fun, collaborative training environment will provide benefits far beyond self-defense.
  • GST Advantage: Gracie University’s GST course is the leading jiu-jitsu based defensive tactics instructor course in America. In addition to a full schedule of regular jiu-jitsu classes, law enforcement students at CTCs are periodically given special "law enforcement only" classes in which the GST techniques are the primary focus. This will provide all the officers the necessary LEO adaptations that will make their newly acquired jiu-jitsu skills useful under stressful circumstances they face in the field.
  • POST Certified: The GST Instructor Certification Course is POST Certified in almost every state. As the first civilian-owned BJJ organization to earn this distinct honor, it goes without saying that Gracie University has been thoroughly vetted to meet the highest quality standards in the country when it comes to tactical effectiveness, officers safety, and de-escalation.
  • UOF Policy Considerations: Since CTC instructors are well-versed in the GST program, they can ensure that extra consideration is given to your agency’s UOF policy each time a new technique is taught.
  • GST Online Video Access: When your agency partners with a Gracie University CTC, every officer gets online video access to the industry-leading Gracie Survival Tactics (GST) law enforcement curriculum (retail value $1500). With 24/7 access to this invaluable curriculum, officers can log on from any computer or mobile device to sharpen their skills at any time, even when they can’t physically get to a live class.
  • Satellite Training Privileges: Every officer who joins a CTC is authorized to train at every CTC on the planet for free. With hundreds of locations worldwide, any time an officer is traveling for business or pleasure, they can drop in at any CTC for no charge, and any classes taken at the destination CTC will count towards their official belt promotion at their home base CTC.

Step 3: Formalize the Partnership & Get Started

In addition to the unmatched safety protocols, quality control, and unique benefits, one of the main advantages of partnering with Gracie University to offer supplementary jiu-jitsu training to officers at your agency is that all Certified Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Training Centers (CTCs) in the United States utilize the same discounted pricing model for law enforcement partnerships.

  • $10 Drop-in Fee Per Class
Most BJJ schools will require a long-term contract commitment for each officer in the department. For our agency-backed law enforcement partnerships, we utilize a highly-discounted drop-in fee per class with no long-term contract requirement. This ensures that the agency only pays for officers who actually take advantage of this unique training opportunity so that the benefits/savings to the agency will always outweigh the cost.
  • $60 Annual Fee Per Active Student
Every officer from your agency who joins the department-backed training program at the CTC will get Gracie University online video access to the Gracie Survival Tactics (GST) law enforcement curriculum (retail value $1500) so they can log on and study their course material at any time. Additionally, every officer will be authorized to drop-in at any other CTC in the world (170+ locations) and train for free for up to one month when traveling for work or pleasure.
  • Discounted Wholesale Uniform Pricing
On average, jiu-jitsu uniforms (gis) cost anywhere from $90-$150. Upon partnering with Gracie University, the agency will be authorized to purchase official Gracie Jiu-Jitsu uniforms at a steeply discounted wholesale price ($60+tax per uniform), so the agency saves money on every uniform.
  • CANCEL ANY TIME
We require no long-term commitment. Our top priority is to ensure that this partnership is the most significant step your agency has ever taken towards: 1) reducing injuries to officers and civilians during use of force encounters, 2) improving the relationship with the community, and 3) enhancing officer wellness and resiliency. If at any point we don't meet or exceed the agency’s expectations in any of these three categories, the partnership can be cancelled, no questions asked.

Once the details and benefits above have received preliminary approval from all members of the command staff at your agency, click here to set up a meeting with the Gracie University leadership team to discuss next steps in formalizing the partnership.

If there is an existing CTC in the region, we can establish the partnership with your agency immediately. If there is not a CTC in the region, we will work expeditiously to identify the most qualified school in the region, conduct background checks on all the instructors, and then put them through the Gracie University Instructor Certification Program which will equip them to serve your agency with all the benefits listed above while adhering to the highest quality standards established and maintained by Gracie University.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Marietta Police Department uses federal asset forfeiture money. In cases, where asset forfeiture money isn’t available, agencies have relied on funds in their Training Budget to pay for the supplementary BJJ training. We've also seen cases where agencies are utilizing funds earmarked for Officer Wellness & Resiliency and in some instances the local Police Foundation has sponsored the program. Regardless of where the money comes from, the workers’ comp savings alone are expected to exceed any investment made into the program. In Marietta PD’s case, the 48% reduction in officer injuries (department wide) resulted in an estimated $66,752 in workers’ comp savings. Even after you deduct the full cost of training (approximately $26,000), the net savings for the agency in the first 18 months exceeds $40,000!

Not likely. In Marietta PD's case, all 95 officers have completed just over 2,600 civilian operated jiu-jitsu classes in nearly two years. The total investment made by the department was approximately $26,000 ($10 per class), and this gave the officers access to a full schedule or daytime/evening/weekend classes every week. In order for the department to maintain an equally robust weekly schedule of jiu-jitsu classes to accommodate every officer’s work schedule and off-duty availability, they would need to have at least two full-time jiu-jitsu instructors on staff. It's fair to say that the annual salary to support even a one full-time in-department instructor would be more than double the total dollar amount that Marietta PD has invested into their BJJ program to date. In additional to the substantial cost savings, there are several additional benefits to having officers attend civilian operated jiu-jitsu classes: 1) Officers get to interact with public in a fun, collaborative training environment, 2) Officers get the physical benefit of regular full-body exercise and the mental benefit of taking a break from the high-stress aspects of police work, and 3) Officers get to learn in an environment that isn't affected by the "cop culture" that so often plagues law enforcement training.

Yes, it can be. In Marietta PD’s case, they were successful in getting the civilian BJJ instructor certified as a subject matter expert under Georgia POST. As a result, every class a Marietta PD officer attends at the BJJ school counts as an hour of POST credited defensive tactics training for the officer.

No. Although we strongly recommend you get your in-house defensive tactics instructors certified in GST prior to instituting a supplementary off-duty BJJ program for your officers, it is not required.

Once an agency begins to see the financial benefits of this supplementary jiu-jitsu training program (reduction in: workers’ comp claims, reduction in suspect injuries and results lawsuits, etc), it will become clear that its most important task will be to incentivize all its sworn officers. Obviously, a major factor in this will be to make sure that the jiu-jitsu school is extremely well run (professional, safe, proven law enforcement friendly curriculum, etc), but even at the most qualified jiu-jitsu school, some officers will be reluctant to try something new. To ensure the most enthusiastic participation from all sworn officers in the agency, when you partner with a Certified Training Center, Gracie University will work directly with your command staff to create a customized incentive program tied to each officer's individual jiu-jitsu progress utilizing any, or all, of the following: bonus pay, uniform pins, PTO, career path promotion points, etc.

CTCs are the ideal partners for law enforcement agencies for all the reasons we outlined. But if there is not a Gracie University CTC in your community, we can assist you in vetting the local BJJ schools, and then select the best candidate to undergo the Gracie University Instructor Certification Program (ICP). Once the head instructors at the school successfully complete the process, the school will be recognized as a Certified Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Training Center and will be equipped to serve your agency according to the quality standards, safety protocols, and law enforcement curriculums established and maintained by Gracie University.

When your agency partners with a CTC, your officers will be attending regular beginner jiu-jitsu classes, along with civilian students, in a program called Gracie Combatives® where they will learn the 36 fundamental techniques of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. The classes are specifically designed to minimize the possibility of injury while providing each student with a solid foundation. Once a student graduates from the Gracie Combatives program, they will transition into the Master Cycle® advanced jiu-jitsu program. In addition to the regular BJJ classes, the CTC will host periodic GST seminars exclusively for the officers from the partnered agency. These special seminars will give each officer the invaluable technical modifications that are needed for successful application of BJJ in law enforcement such as weapon retention strategies, handcuffing transitions, and multiple-officer arrest strategies.

For National Security reasons, additional information requires our personal attention. Please contact the GST Team by sending an email to: [email protected] or calling 310-893-0400 ext. 3.

Even though GST is growing at an unprecedented rate, we are always looking to partner with new hosting departments/organizations to continue making the course available in as many territories as possible.

This page is intended to detail the benefits, eligibility requirements and the expectations so that you can make an informed decision as to whether or not hosting is the right option for your organization.

Benefits:

  • The host will earn one (1) complimentary slot for every 10 paid slots in the course. It is not uncommon for host agencies to earn 5-8 complimentary slots in a single course. Keep in mind that most or all of the paid slots typically come from outside agencies, so it’s very common for the hosting agency to have no out-of-pocket expense.
  • By becoming a host in a new territory, the GST course becomes available to countless officers in the region who would have never otherwise had access to the system.
  • It is common for a GST host to form bonds with many fellow law enforcement professionals across the nation as they become part of the large GST family. These bonds often extend beyond DT training as GST agencies commonly partner with each other in a variety of LE subjects/courses.
  • Gracie University does not charge the host agency any fees, unless the host wishes to purchase additional slots beyond the number of complimentary slots that they earn.

Eligibility:

  • The hosting organization must be a first-responder government agency (federal/local/state/tribal/county/college police/hospital police/etc.).
  • There must not be an active GST host already established in the region (contact [email protected] to inquire about availability of the region). If there is no established host in the region, then the first agency that can complete the verification process of Step 1 will get first shot at being the official GST host in the region.
  • The standard requirement for host’s facilities is 3400+ square feet of continuous mat space. However, as long as the floor space is sufficient, we can start the process with significantly less mat space with the understanding that the mat space will need to be expanded if the enrollments look like they will outgrow the starting mat space. Gracie University can help obtain mats for qualified hosts.
  • All of the mat space must be in one large room such as a gymnasium. The mats and the facility can be rented or borrowed if not owned by the agency. Often times agencies will ask to use the facility from a local high school, recreation center, or BJJ academy if they don’t have enough space at their police facility.
  • Host’s facilities must have basic amenities such as restrooms and water fountains.

Once a prospective host has contacted us and been confirmed as qualified, here are the four steps they will need to complete to bring the GST course to fruition:

Step 1: The First 15
Send us a list of 15 individuals who are seriously interested, and qualified, to attend the prospective GST course hosted by your organization. The following individuals are qualified to attend:

  • First Responders who are employed by government agencies.
  • Active members of the Military and Military reserves.
  • Corrections officers who are employed by government agencies.
  • Probation officers who are employed by government agencies.

“Seriously interested” is defined as someone who states that they are “highly likely” (90% chance or greater) to attend the course if your agency was to host it.

This list does not include the complimentary slots that the host will earn.

Once the list of 15 is compiled, the prospective host will send it to [email protected]. Someone from Gracie University will then vet the list. It is highly recommended to gather more than 15 as it is common for 3-5 of the list to not verify as they advise Gracie University that their status has changed and they will not be likely to attend (this is usually due to: injury, budgetary changes, command changes, staffing shortages, life changes, etc.)

Once 15 individuals are verified as seriously interested and qualified, Gracie University and the agency will choose a mutually acceptable course date at least 8 months from the date of the completion of this step. Gracie University will then put a temporary hold on that course date (maintaining the hold on the date is contingent on the completion of the subsequent steps).

Step 2: 40 Serious Leads
The host needs to provide a list of 40 serious leads. This is a continuation of the first step, and the first 15 will count towards the list of 40 qualified, seriously-interested individuals. The agency is usually given 6 weeks to achieve this step. This is often reported as the most challenging step of the process. Once the 40 has been sent in to Gracie University and verified, they can move to step 3.

Step 3: 20 Committed
20 individuals must either pay the tuition or send Gracie University a purchase order. The standard time frame given to complete this step is 45 days from the previous step.

Step 4: 30 Committed
30 individuals must have paid the tuition or sent Gracie University a purchase order. The standard time frame given for completion of this step is 30 days from the previous step. Once 30 people have paid the full tuition, we will add the new GST course to the publicized list of upcoming courses so that officers all over the country will be notified and invited to attend. When this happens, enrollment typically doubles or triples before the course takes place.

Beyond Level 1
It's a fair amount of work to get the first one going, but almost every host who successfully completes their first GST course, describes it as challenging but well worth it. In fact, after the first course is complete, almost all hosts become repeat hosts for several years thereafter, some agencies have been hosting annual GST courses for over 18 years!

After hosting one or more successful GST Level 1 courses, a host may be qualified to host a GST Level 2 Course or a GST Dual Certification Course (Levels 1& 2) at their location so that all the officers in the region can benefit from the complete GST curriculum.

If you're interested in hosting, we look forward to working with you. If you have any questions, or you'd like to confirm the availability of your territory before getting started, please contact us at [email protected] or call 310-893-0400 ext. 3.

GST is the fastest growing jiu-jitsu based defensive tactics program in the United States. If you haven’t yet participated in the program, chances are you are stuck without an answer to one of these 10 questions.

We produced this video specifically to help you get over the hump and make it happen. If you have any questions that are not addressed in the video or in the literature below, contact the GST Team at [email protected]. If you're ready to roll, click here to find an upcoming course near you, and we’ll see you on the mat!

10 Questions Before Your First GST Course

  1. What’s the difference between the GST techniques and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
The GST techniques are VERY different from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. First and foremost, each and every technique has been modified for law enforcement applicability. Some of the main adaptations include:
    • Weapon retention and awareness– All of the GST techniques have been adapted to address weapon retention. In regular jiu-jitsu practice, there is no need to be conscious of weapons on your belt. However, in Law Enforcement, every fight is an “armed encounter” as the officer has multiple weapons on his/her duty belt that must not be taken by the subject.
    • Adapted for improved mobility– A common concern about jiu-jitsu is that a law enforcement officer’s duty-belt and tactical gear inhibits their ability to move and function. GST is specifically designed to accommodate the reduced mobility experienced by law enforcement professionals when wearing tactical gear.
    • There is no “tap-out” on the street– Since an actual law enforcement call doesn’t end with a “tap out”, all the GST techniques have been customized to end with the subject in handcuffs.
  2. How is the five-day GST course structured and what are the objectives we can accomplish in those five days?
The first three days consist of learning and drilling the techniques as well as the principles and mindset of the system. After the maximum assimilation of those first three days, the student spends two days immersed in teaching mastery. This is important because the techniques of the first three days are only valuable for your organization if you become a highly proficient teacher and can effectively administer the information that you absorb from us. Over 80% of the positive feedback from GST graduates is comprised of how the teaching mastery portion of the course exceeded their expectations.
  3. What if I have no previous grappling experience?
You came to the right place! In the private sector, one of the main reasons for our success is that we know how to safely and effectively teach jiu-jitsu to the beginner. We apply this same methodology to our GST courses bringing a cooperative atmosphere that is fun, effective, and encouraging for people with no previous experience. To meet our amazing team of GST Master Instructors and to read actual reviews from beginner students who attended their courses, click here.
  4. Is GST Medically and Legally reviewed?
We are proud to say that it is. Over the years, we have had several medical professionals and attorneys attend the actual course to scrutinize it from a liability, safety, and best practices perspective as it pertains to Law Enforcement. Not only are their reviews published and accessible online by clicking here, but many of these experts have indicated that they are willing to testify as expert witnesses in use-of-force litigation that involves a GST certified agency.
  5. What is the difference between GST Level 1 and GST Level 2?
If we had to generalize, we would say that the difference can be summed up with the phrase “Independence vs. Interdependence.” The main goal for GST Level 1 is “independence." Which, for an officer who is operating solo, is to have the ability to survive and control a subject effectively. On the other hand, the Level 2 course focuses, among other things, on officers operating interdependently with one another as a team. This includes two officer takedowns, multiple officer control strategies, and vehicle extractions. For many years there was only a GST Level 1 course. However, throughout the years we received many requests for various law enforcement-specific situations and contingencies that were not addressed in Level 1. While we were not willing to sacrifice the Level 1 techniques in order to make room for additional techniques to address the "what-if" scenarios, eventually, when we had accumulated enough contingency requests to warrant developing a new course, we created GST Level 2. Keep in mind, GST Level 1 completion is a prerequisite for the Level 2 course because an officer must first be able to help themselves before they can be effective in helping another officer.
  6. How long are the certification periods for each course, and what are the benefits of holding a current certificate?
The certification period for GST, Level 1 and Level 2, is 24 months. The benefits of having a currently certified GST instructor in your organization include:
    1. Gracie University expert witnesses testimony available to testify on behalf of the department in allegations of excessive force involving the use of GST.
    2. Free access to the GST online course that corresponds to the GST certification. Current Level 1 instructors will have access to all the Level 1 lessons. Level 2 instructors will have access to the whole GST system comprised of the 23 Level 1 and 17 Level 2 lessons.
    3. Currently, certified Level 2 instructors need only to attend Level 2 courses to maintain their certifications. In addition to certifying the student on the Level 2 lessons, the Level 2 course also re-certifies the student on the Level 1 lessons.
    4. Currently, certified Level 2 instructors can attend any Level 1 course for free (space permitting). They will be acting in an assistant instructor capacity. Although it doesn’t serve as a re-certification, it’s a great way to make more connections, learn more about the system by getting the immersive Level 1 experience again, learn the latest updates on the techniques, and develop your teaching skills by teaching alongside the GST head instructors. Please note: although free, pre-registration is required for Level 1 participation to ensure there is sufficient space for Level 2 assistants.
    5. Level 2 certified instructors get access to The LAB, an ever-evolving online video library comprised of the new ideas that surface at each GST Level 2 Live Instructor Certification Course.
  7. What do I wear, and who do I partner with?
We don’t wear shoes on the mat for sanitary and safety reasons. Clothing options include: rash guards, t-shirts, fight shorts, spats, BDU/6-pocket pants, or gi pants. Close to the end of the week, the instructor will let you know when to bring your duty-belt. Your duty belt should have a training firearm -if you carry one on the job. If you only carry pepper spray, Taser, or a different tool, you're invited to bring an inert/training version of that tool. Please no hazardous or live weapons of any kind in the training area. For those who carry a full duty-belt or “Sam Browne,” it's important to also have your under-belt, keepers, and BDU’s/six-pocket pants with them so that the duty-belt stays secure on your waist in a realistic manner during training. Our protocol regarding training partners, is to have more advanced students paired with less knowledgeable students. We also permit those from the same department to partner with one another, although we may shuffle the partners so that everyone gets to work with a variety of body-types for a productive training experience. Regardless of who you partner with, the overwhelming experience is one of maximum collaboration in a non-competitive atmosphere.
  8. How do the Gracies teach cops if they themselves are not law enforcement officers?
Initially, members of the Gracie Family were the only ones to teach the GST program. Over the years however, we've grown a team of GST Master Instructors comprised of both active duty and retired Law Enforcement Professionals. So now, in addition to a nearly 100-year legacy of jiu-jitsu, the GST program has benefited from the direct input of a handful of incredible human beings with over 100 years of combined law enforcement experience. Additionally, the constant collaboration and sharing between the GST instructors and the thousands of law enforcement professionals that we teach every year, results in a continuous and never-ending refinement of the system for our clients. This is why GST is one of the fastest growing Defensive Tactics systems in the country.
  9. What if my command staff does not sponsor my participation in GST?
We are fully aware of the challenges that officers face with this. This is the main reason we do the breakdown videos. We want to educate the police leadership on the need for officers to have access to better training. We fully realize that the videos may not be enough. We are in constant communication with officers from many agencies and receive reports on how they overcame this challenge in their respective departments. We then will pass that information along to officers, from other departments, who are facing the same challenges. We also have various materials that may help officers with their approval process. In particular, we have an article, "9 Strategies on Implementing GST at Your Agency,” that serves as a guide for officers who are engaged in this struggle. Also, many officers have had success once they graduated from the course and returned to their agencies to showcase what they have learned. The teaching methodologies that are taught in the last two days of the course also help officers do outstanding demonstrations for their command staffs to gain approval in implementing the material to the rest of their agency. Officers have even been reimbursed by their agencies for their GST tuition after their command staff approved the implementation of GST. Finally, if your agency will not fund your training, email us at [email protected] as we have self-funding discounts available, not to mention the GST Online Certification options for Levels 1 and 2, which are substantially more affordable when you factor in the travel cost savings. We do not believe that money should stand in the way of you attending GST!
  10. Can I host a GST course at my Department?
Yes! In our quest to make GST accessible to as many law enforcement officers as possible, we are always looking to establish new hosting relationships. As an incentive for your department to work with us, we will grant free course participation for the defensive tactics instructors in your department. If there are no established GST hosts already in your territory, we encourage you to begin the hosting process and bring GST to your region. If you are the training coordinator or the defensive tactics instructor in your organization, please click here to learn more about the benefits of hosting a GST course at your department.

Bonus Questions (common questions):
  • Who teaches the GST in-person courses? We have been teaching GST for over 25 years, and in this time we have developed a team of world-class instructors (many of whom are active duty or retired LEOs) that are dedicated to upholding the highest quality standards. To learn more about each GST Master Instructors, and to see what course participants are saying about each member of the team, click here.
  • How can I reserve a spot in a live GST course? Reservation is contingent upon receipt of a Purchase Order or payment in full.
  • How can my agency reserve a spot with a Purchase Order? Click here to request an invoice.
  • Can I receive CA POST credit through the GST Online ICP? No, to obtain CA POST credit, you must attend a live hands-on GST course in California.
  • What should I bring to class? Duty Belt / Gun Belt with training gun (injection-molded, plastic or rubber). Please do not bring any live lethal guns, chemical/OC sprays, knives live TASERs/CEWs in the training site.
  • I have a court appearance, can I miss a day of class? If you must miss a single day of class for court, you may still be able to graduate depending on which day it is. Contact [email protected] for more information.
  • When will I receive free access to GST online video content? Please allow 10 business days after completion of the course for the material to be unlocked in your online GU lesson library.
  • Can I gain access to the GST content before the course? No, we will unlock the content after the completion of the course. Remember, absolutely no jiu-jitsu experience is necessary to attend the GST Level 1 course.
  • What's the price of the GST Online Instructor Certification Program and do I need a training partner? The cost is $1500 per officer. Yes, you need someone to go through all the material with. We highly recommend taking the online course with a training partner from your agency. If your partner wants to get certified as well, they will need to pay for the ICP separately and submit separate videos for their certification, even though they'd be completing it simultaneously.
  • I just want to learn the techniques, can I purchase the GST Online Course without pursuing Instructor Certification? No. The online GST course is only for those pursuing Instructor Certification.
