Q. I just started Gracie jiu jitsu any tips to help me get my combatives belt easier possibly faster
Kjordan (11/10/2024 8:55 AM)
A. We've found that those who rush the training tend not to develop lasting reflexes or deep understanding of the techniques. That's why we set a minimum time for promotion eligibility. As for making it easier to pass the test, study the lessons, take notes, and practice, practice, practice.

Q. How dangerous do you think a punch within the 3-4 scale is if thrown by a man against a woman? I know the aim is to train to minimise that scale, but asking because I have zero expectation of what that might feel like in real life. Having never been punched by man (or woman!), and since it's not something you could train to feel, it would be good to have some sort of idea of what that might feel like. I'm imagining a level 4 punch could still make you very dizzy and cloudy?
 (10/30/2024 12:13 PM)
A. Punches at the high end of this level could leave you with a bruise/black eye, bloody nose, split lip, and maybe a chipped tooth, but they won't leave you unconscious or out of breath.

Q. Should base getup be practiced on both sides or just my dominate side?
Treble (10/17/2024 12:22 PM)
A. You can usually choose a side, but it's an easy move and good exercise, so practice on both sides.

Q. Why is there no lesson for the situation when the Bad Guy starts the fight with a kick? Is it not so common? Is it addressed in the master cycle?
Niklas Meier (10/9/2024 11:33 AM)
A. It's uncommon, and the two arm distance management and distance closing techniques apply to both kicks and punches. We address a few specific kick counters in the Master Cycle, but your best defense is stay just out of range, then achieve the clinch as the kick retracts.

Q. Not really a question, just thanks! Twenty years ago I trained Filipino Martial Arts, Muay Thai, along with some BJJ. Last night, at the gym, I got on the mat for the first time in two decades. I practiced base get-up, shrimp and break falls. It went well! Looking forward to training again. Onward!
Treble (10/3/2024 10:04 AM)
A. Good for you! We've found no other martial art allows your body to train as you age as well as jiu-jitsu.

Q. I am a very competitive athlete.. I play all sports. Although, I am a beginner in this combative sport. What is the difference between Beginner program and the Empowering Women program?
Shantel Cote (9/30/2024 2:06 PM)
A. Both programs are self-defense focused - not sport applications. The Gracie Combatives program addresses a generic street fight while Women Empowered focuses on countering sexual assault.

Q. Hello there, after being finally able to visit a few CTCs including Headquarters I have 2 questions: 1. in CTCs there are two Techniques taught in a lesson. One standing and one on the ground. For Example the Leg Hook Takedown with the Trap and Roll for day one. The recommended Training schedule for the online classes, just do one lesson a day and the leg hook Takedown is introduced for the first time on the 9. day. I train mainly at home. And only be able to make it to a CTC in Düsseldorf Germany for two classes a month. Should i use the same class structure from the ctcs at home or follow the recommended training Schedule from the PDF? What would be the most ideal order for someone taking just private lessons for example? 2. Why are the combative videos filmed in No-Gi and the combatives Classes in CTCs are done Gi? Best Regards from Germany. Niklas P.S.: I had a great time in the CTCs and hope to do my combatives Test in Düsseldorf Germany next year.
Niklas Meier (9/30/2024 8:17 AM)
A. 1. The online course is based on the optimal progression. The CTC curricula must accommodate students at all stages of the journey to award of the Gracie Combatives belt, so the sequence and pairing for standing/ground lessons is differently organized. You should follow the online sequence. 2. For group classes, the white gi promotes uniformity, cleanliness, and comfort, not to mention that it is the traditional uniform for jiu-jitsu instruction as taught at the original Gracie Academy.

Q. I'm a TCOLE certified instructor in Texas and would love to learn this and then teach a combative class for LEO out in this area due to no classes be out here. Any recommendations as far as further training certifications?
Randerson0591 (9/27/2024 5:51 PM)
A. Look into our Gracie Survival Tactics instructor program. As an alternative, start a Gracie Garage and recruit fellow LEOs to join you. Ideally, convince your organization to import the GST program into their training and volunteer to take the lead in setting it up. If your organization lacks the personnel or funds, then consider partnering with regional LEOs.

Q. Once maybe if I’m able to afford it there is one Gracie/Muay Thai class from Royce Gracie lineage vs a kempo/bjj class that has a lineage of rickson Gracie…which one would be the closest to Gracie university curriculum?
 (9/12/2024 12:39 AM)
A. Try both and choose the one that provides safety, structure, and street readiness.

Q. I live 2 and a half hours one way from a Gracie school.im really out of shape but was considering women empowered because it may be easier than gracie combatives because I don’t think I can handle the complicated moves,I’m nervous about the leg chokes and takedowns.would women empowered be the best 1st choice?
Bjj84way (9/11/2024 6:05 PM)
A. We recommend that you start with Women Empowered based on what you've written.
Gracie University 1
Q. How is 2.0 different from Gracie Combatives?
Rick P. (8/17/2024 8:48 AM)
A. The core material is the same, but with major improvements in production value and presentation as well the addition of street tips and bonus techniques.

Q. Big thanks for the great content from Denmark! Keep doing you. Question. Will there also be a 2.0 update on MC (blue belt and above)?
DA.NA (8/1/2024 4:06 AM)
A. It's not planned for the immediate future. We have too many other projects in the works!
Gracie University 1
Q. I wanted to check with y'all first - I have made flash cards with the technique name on the front and on the back it has GIFs of each of the drill videos in the lessons summarizing essential details, most common mistake, core principles, and indicators. Is it okay if I make my flashcard deck public on platforms like quizlet or anki in case other GJJ students find them helpful? Thanks for all the info that you put out!!!
 (7/30/2024 10:53 PM)
A. No proprietary information can be shared in a public forum, even if it’s for free, without having been reviewed by GU for approval. We do this to ensure that only the highest presentation standards are associated with our brand.

Q. I find this whole thing outrageous. How come in the years since the release of GC 1.0, A) Rener's hairline hasn't receded B) mine has and C) even though Ryron's has as well, he's more of a handsome devil now than he already was back in the day?! It drives me insane! Love your work, guys. All the best!
Doubles666 (7/18/2024 8:29 PM)
A. Good genes.
Gracie University 1
Q. I’ve just enrolled in the GC 2.0 online courses. I do not live close to a ctc. Would I be able to pop into a ctc or the Torrence HQ to participate in a GC live class once or twice a month ? Would that require a membership to that particular ctc? Thanks
Jose Escobar (4/23/2024 8:39 AM)
A. You would likely have to pay a drop-in fee and sign a liability waiver, but the CTC would welcome you.

Q. Quick question about the guard, is it a good idea to practice having both legs over the other. As in round the back having left over right and then right over left? Or just go with what feels stronger?
bruceirving (4/10/2024 6:14 AM)
A. Go with the strongest, most comfortable variation. You may change it when necessary to facilitate a follow-on technique.
Gracie University 1
Q. For base can you use one hand to get up and one hand in front to protect against strikes? Aka technical stand
SPWEBB (3/7/2024 10:51 AM)
A. Yes.
Gracie University 1
Q. What's the difference between bottom mount and guard?
keiwaves (3/6/2024 11:33 PM)
A. In both positions, you are on your back. In bottom mount, the BG is north of your thighs/hips and astride your torso. In guard, the BG is south of your thighs/hips. If your feet are crossed behind the BG's back, you're in closed guard. If not, then you're in open guard.

Q. I have Gracie combatives 1.0 and watch it on the Gracie University, I got this after having the old DVDs. Should I upgrade to the 2.0? I am doing this now with a few others that have never done any Jiu Jitsu.
The Wrecking Ball (2/29/2024 1:05 PM)
A. Upgrade. It's worth the investment.

Q. Classic... Legs spread wide..."Nice to meet you, lets fight" ....hilarious!

A. Keeping it playful!

Q. Assuming I manage to successfully present all the techniques of the course in a live test - does that then correspond to the same requirements that you have for awarding a blue belt?
Seaflowfight (2/11/2024 8:45 PM)
A. We're looking for comfort in the major positions. That will require learning additional techniques in the Master Cycle and gaining experience under the pressure of sparring and drilling with increased resistance.
Gracie University 1
Q. How / Where does someone access the training schedule ?
motofellow (2/10/2024 11:07 AM)
A. You can access the Gracie Combatives 2.0 Official Handbook and the Gracie Combatives 2.0 Recommended Training Schedule from the "My Files" tab on the "My Dashboard" page.
Gracie University Support
Q. If I am teaching the GC 2.0 to a group, does each person get to test for the belt upon completion even though it's just a group training off of the one program? Also, is the belt awarded upon a successful test a official blue belt?
Micah The Machete  (2/8/2024 6:10 PM)
A. Each person who tests must be registered individually with Gracie University. Passing the Gracie Combatives test earns the Gracie Combatives belt. You must live test to earn a blue belt.
Gracie University 1
Q. What is the standart recommended times a slice in a lesson should be drilled? 4-10 times?
PropositionDirk (2/8/2024 5:07 PM)
A. Drill the move as many times as you can fit into your allocated training time, but at least 2-3 times to confirm the movement sequence. More is better. Eventually, you want to be able to execute the move reflexively (without thinking).
Gracie University 1
Q. Currently joined a dojo learning Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and loving it. We do a bit of grappling with strikes and some BJJ too. Heard so much about the combative course and am stoked you have released the 2.0. Had to jump on. Looking forward to learning techniques to add to my roll.
tommo1968 (2/8/2024 4:58 AM)

Prepper (2/5/2024 11:30 PM)
A. It's unlikely. Don't wait for it. Buy a comparable mat and start the journey.
