Not really beyond the obvious conclusion one could draw from an opponent's physical condition. But, even this would not reveal the extent to their knowledge and skill. Once you're engaged, then you can draw a better picture based on their behaviors and then determine their potential vulnerabilities.

Re: Straight Armlock (Mount), partner and I spent over an hour trying to end up over the opponent so we could gently spin and then "sit down" as we initiated the grasp of the arm, as per DVD. We used as much biomechanics as possible to make this work. We had to use a punching bag on the floor to continue analysis and practice. We concluded that, based on our similar builds, it is not possible to sit gently. As we complete the spin, our shorter legs relative to the weight and thickness of our bodies result in a fall rather than a sit. We can only mitigate by spinning as close to the opponent's body as possible (actually rubbing) and then falling and grasping the arm in the process. This seemed to be the slowest way to achieve objective, plus the falls hurt our tailbones and we could only practice for so long. Is this a common problem with body types or are we just not doing the technique correctly?

Very common for beginners. This moves generally requires a lot of practice. Keep drilling. Try having your partner (on the bottom) hold onto your lapels and help guide you into the final sitting position, not letting you fall backwards. It will get better!

I grapple with this guy who is bigger and stronger than me (300lbs) I can survive him, but I tap out because I get tired and mainly because he lays flat on me with his weight. Any ideas to overcome this issue as I know you probably get this question a lot. I want to make changes so I can make my jujitsu better. Thanks!

Here in Brasil It was created the idea of go through the car over. Now I see that it has nothing to do to effectness in a real fight. As longer a guy attack someone else, more get tired mentally and phisically.Absolutelly right.

hello, I listened to the fight works podcast interview with Rener many times and really enjoy this interview about him speaking about the original fight philosophy of Helio gracie, and how most, if not all jiu jitsu schools dont know, or use helios philosophy or survival aspect in their jiu jitsu. And how it takes about 3-5 years to really understand and use it in their jiu jitsu. I also listened to Ryrons interview when he was cornering Javier, and he also talked about Helios mind set, and said you dont need too much techniques, but more so the helio gracie philosophy and mindset to become a blackbelt. Since both of the main instuctors of the gracie academy think its so important i was wondering if you could tell me, what exactly is the original fight philosophy of Helio and his mindset, so when i'm training gracie jiu jitsu or just thinking about jiu jitsu, i can always keep it in my mind. Or if someone ask me, why i do gracie jiu jitsu and not brazilian jiu jitsu, i can explain to them clearly the helio gracie mindset is what makes it Gracie jiu jitsu. mindset. It means that you are in a position to block, deflect, or avoid strikes that are no harder than a 5 on a 10 scale. You may still get hit, but not with a fight-ending blow. To be sure, each person will have different tolerance levels for strikes, so the objective is to not get hit at all, but we can't guarantee that against all opponents.

I Beleive in the Gracie way to preserve energy. When I am in the Dojo and am sparring I still run out of gas in a short amount of time. What else can I do to preserve or build my stamina while i'm rolling on the mat with a bigger opponent. I am soooo frustrated with this, I can run 5.5 miles with ease and not be tired but get me on the ground for three minutes and I am done. Help!!!!

As technical proficiency goes up so does energy efficiency. If you're wasting too much energy, it's because you haven't developed a strong enough relationship with the techniques yet. Focus on performing lots of repetitions at various intensity levels, and, with time, you will notice your "endurance" will get a lot better.

It all depends on the situation. If you use jiu-jitsu only in self-defense, as it was meant to be used, there shouldn't be trouble. Of course, a true practitioner of jiu-jitsu usually has the confidence to avoid trouble to begin with.
